The Screen is Changing

Screens are a funny sort of business.  While they used to be nothing more than simple boxes where a bunch of tiny lights flickered one of two colors, they have evolved to an extent that their original inventors could hardly have imagined.  In this day and age, there are more things which are capable with a “simple” monitor than have ever been possible before.  The very act of watching TV has even changed, as a consequence of what today’s monitors are capable of.  While the old monitors had only a few colors, only a few channels and only a few customization options, today’s monitors are a great deal more like basic computers, which can be customized like crazy.  And you can do things on them that take away some of the need for the gaming devices people often connect them to.  Today’s TV is not just about watching things, but about affecting them as well.

Consider that there are screens which allow you to wear 3d glasses (which actually look good, these days) and see the action unfolding from a whole new perspective.  As a matter of fact, the idea of perspective has actually inspired a new twist on 3d TV, in which looking at the screen from a slightly different angle can actually give you a slightly different view of things.  How far are we really from the day when you can watch a sort of round TV, and see any angle of the action that you want?  That would make everyone the director, now wouldn’t it?

There are even screens which allow you to touch them and interact with their content directly.  You can arrange things as you please, just as you arrange things in a real room.  You could make a virtual mess, and then clean it up with a wave of your hand.  Don’t you wish you could do that at home?  The possibilities with today’s screens even go as far as making video based phone calls.  Who needs to just talk, when you can see the person?  Of course, it’s better if they are cute.
