How to Destroy a Hard Drive

When you buy a computer you usually do not want to keep the e old.  Have you thought about your computer’s hard drive and all the information it contains?  It contains information such as account numbers, passwords and personal information.  Consumers want to be sure their hard drive is destroyed effectively otherwise it can be a gold mine for hackers, identity thieves, etc.

One way to destroy the computer’s hard drive is to destroy it file by file.  This method is probably acceptable if the consumer is giving the computer away and isn’t terribly concerned with destroying the entire drive.  This simply means all of the files are wiped from the hard drive but the disk is still intact.   The myth that erasing from the file from the recycle bin erases the file is just that, a myth.  There are data shredding programs that can be purchased for extra piece of mind that data is truly gone from the computer.

If the computer is simply ready to be discarded the best way to destroy the drive is to destroy it physically and it’s easy.   Simply remove the hard drive from the computer.  All you have to do is take a power drill and drill four holes through the physical hard drive.   The drive is unable to spin and no one can access any of the information on the drive if they were to access it.   It can be taken a step further by prying the drive open and destroying the physical components inside the drive.

Computer hard drives are a wealth of information and consumers want to take extra care to be certain their hard drive information cannot be accessed by anyone who may use the information in a fraudulent manner.
